Summer at RBC: Christian Ethics and Greek Intensives

Learning never stops at RBC.

This summer, several students chose to stay on campus and dedicate their time off to further study.

Dr. Matthew Dudreck’s Greek I and II summer intensive was offered for a fourth year. And for the first time in over a decade, a class in ethics was offered.

Christian Ethics with Dr. Berntson

Part of Dr. R.C. Sproul’s vision for RBC was to have a focus on Christian ethics: How do we apply what we learn from Scripture to the world around us?

Dr. Levi Berntson shares Dr. Sproul’s sentiment. He said, “I’ve always wanted to have a class that focuses on Christian living in the modern world. There are so many difficult ethical situations that are unique to a world of contemporary technology in medicine, conflict, and other such things.”

In this course, Dr. Berntson first introduced students to the history of ethics. Then he walked them through the Ten Commandments and applied each one to the complexities of modern life.

Cooper, a senior, shared, “I really appreciated the application that is involved in this course. Using the Ten Commandments as our standard, we sort through many different modern case studies and attempt to answer these difficult questions in light of the ethics that the Lord gave us.”

Aimee, a sophomore, added, “This course has reminded me how many times we have to make decisions with ethical implications throughout everyday life, and how . . . God’s Word really does apply to every circumstance and is our guide for every decision.”

Greek I and II with Dr. Dudreck

Once again, students signed up to get ahead on their Greek, working through a year’s worth of Koine Greek in two months.

The class’s immersive style aids in language acquisition. With morning lessons and afternoon workshops, and without having to balance priorities from other classes, students dedicated a full seven weeks to Greek. Some mentioned that by the second week of classes, they could follow along in their Greek New Testament at church.

Joshua, a sophomore, said, *“The course has given me a love for the Greek language and for Scripture. Despite the challenges of an intensive course, we were all having fun together. You get to know your classmates and Dr. Dudreck through it, and you are all there for the goal of learning how to read Scripture.” *
