RBC Spotlight: Lynn Shaw, Student Care Advisor
Posted On June 26, 2023
As an RBC Student Care Advisor, Lynn Shaw meets with female students to provide encouragement, mentoring, prayer, and discipleship. She also hosts a ladies’ tea each semester.
We recently sat down with Mrs. Shaw to ask her about her life, faith, and work at RBC.
Why do you enjoy working at RBC?
My role at RBC is a dream job for me! My husband, Ben Shaw, and I have tremendously enjoyed the opportunities we have had in the past to minister to (and have fun with!) college students, so to be able to work among them full-time is a thrill for us both. We also appreciate the wonderful work environment we have here, working with a fabulous group of like-minded folks who love Jesus—and Reformed theology—as much as we do.
What aspect of working with students do you find most rewarding?
It is so wonderful to watch students grow in every way over the course of an academic year. I often say that I have the great privilege of watching them come in as teens and grow into friends by the end of the first year.
How would you describe the community at RBC?
I would describe the RBC community as warm, inviting, and fun.
How have you seen students mature in their walk with Christ while attending RBC?
One of the most thrilling things for me is to watch students become participating members of their local church. Church involvement is something that is emphasized from day one here at RBC, and the vast majority of students really do take their church membership seriously. I've seen them working with children in Sunday school, volunteering in the nursery, helping with youth, working in the kitchen, etc. As they grow in their understanding of Scripture, they also make use of their gifts in the body of Christ.
When and how did you come to faith in Christ?
The Lord saw fit to bring me to Himself when I was a 23-year-old mother of a one-year-old. I came from a very difficult background and was in the midst of a really bad relationship at the time, but God made Himself known to me through His Word and some Christian friends. The book Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis was also quite helpful in overcoming my many objections to Christianity.
What is your favorite book of the Bible?
I love the book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes, more than any other book, has taught me how I should view this life under the sun and find joy in it. The book of Hebrews is a close second favorite.
Have you traveled overseas for missions?
I have not done any overseas missions work, but I have traveled to other countries for business. I did some work in international adoption for a Christian agency and traveled to a few Third World countries. International travel is something that I believe everyone should do at some point, if at all possible. It is life-changing.
When you’re going on a trip, what are your travel essentials?
Beside bringing the essentials, I always pack water and cough drops.
What do you have a passion for?
My biggest passion is to be used by God to encourage others to find rest and joy in Jesus Christ.
What are your favorite hobbies or pastimes?
I love gardening and cooking for friends and family.
Do you have children?
I am blessed with four children and nine grandchildren.
What activities do you enjoy doing in Florida?
Other than enjoying the wonderful weather on my porch, my favorite Florida activity so far has been the riverboat lunch cruise on the St. Johns River that we just enjoyed.
