How to Maintain Spiritual Disciplines during Major Life Changes

All of us experience major changes throughout our lives. Some of these, such as graduations, weddings, and the birth of a child, are enormously joyful. Others, such as the death of a loved one, are enormously sad. Some, such as starting at a new school or job, or moving to a new city, state, or country, can provoke anxiety and worry.

When we experience such changes, the overwhelming feelings that accompany them can be distracting. We can sometimes find ourselves neglecting prayer, the reading of Scripture, and attendance at a local church.

Moving to a new city, state, or country can be particularly disorienting when it comes to church attendance, especially if we have left a home church that we have attended for many years. Leaving a church family can be as difficult as moving away from your biological family. Now you have to find a brand-new church, and it will be filled with people who do not know you from Adam. In such times, the enemy can discourage us and tempt us to give up looking.

Whether a major life change is planned or occurs unexpectedly, we have to be prepared in advance for the temptations that will accompany it. We have to commit in advance to pray, to read and meditate on God’s Word, and if the change involves a move, to find a faithful local church as soon as possible.

If you are moving and have friends in the area to which you are moving, ask them for suggestions. If not, do research online before you move and make a list. Find churches close to your new home that faithfully preach the gospel and visit them. Choose one, start attending, and get involved.
