Course Highlight: Summer Greek Intensive
Posted On August 03, 2023
This summer, several of our students gained a new appreciation for God’s Word as they studied the basics of biblical (Koine) Greek together in RBC’s first-ever summer intensive class with Dr. Matthew Dudreck, our associate professor of New Testament.
This intensive class was designed to help students focus on the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary of Koine Greek. By the end of the summer, students could begin to read and understand elementary texts from the Greek New Testament.
Seth, a sophomore, shared that “studying Greek has enhanced my approach to studying God’s Word. Through learning this language, I have unlocked insights into the rules and nuances of Greek grammar. These insights have had a profound impact on my reading of biblical passages, allowing me to grasp the intended meaning with more clarity.”
Each student participated in morning lectures four days a week, plus an afternoon laboratory time where they were encouraged to ask questions and apply what they were learning.
“My favorite aspect of studying Greek in this format was the immersive experience it provided. Since I wasn’t taking any other classes, I could focus on studying Greek as much as I needed without the fear of falling behind. Learning Greek has helped me read the Scriptures with much more care and attention than I used to before,” said Isabella, a junior.
Dr. Dudreck was encouraged and impressed by this inaugural class’ enthusiasm and hard work: “I can’t think of a better gift to give to any of my students than the ability to read and study Scripture in its original language. To see that happen in such a short period of time is always extremely satisfying.”
In addition to receiving credits for the Greek I and II classes, a requirement for all students majoring in Biblical Studies, our students enjoyed spending the summer together on our beautiful campus.
“The blessing of studying Greek over this summer has bound all of us more closely to one another in fellowship and friendship in study and service,” said Carter, a sophomore. “Our hearts are woven closer to one another through our loving Lord Jesus Christ.”
